February 6, 2005--We'd been having a warm, warm winter. January was almost snowless. We'd had some weeks of cold rain. I figured if it were about 5 degrees colder, we'd have heavy snow--but it stayed above freezing and stayed with rain. February was starting out downright warm, so we decided to take a Sunday afternoon outing to a castle.
Our base paper gave directions to Wolfsburg, a castle we hadn't visited near the city of Neustadt, less than an hour away. We drove down picturesque B48 through forested hills and saw the castle high above the town. We had a short but steep hike up to the castle. The weather had turned colder, but we dressed warmly and enjoyed getting out in the crisp air. Then we roamed around the little old castle ruin, and I took lots of pictures. The castle was first built in 1223.
Even in the bleakness of a brown winter day, the views were pretty. The castle commanded the main pass through the hills into the city.
On the way home, we tried out a new restaurant in Fischbach and liked it so much that Steve & I made reservations to return on Valentine's Day. With German leisurely service, eating dinner took about as long as our time at the castle.
Below are pictures from our trip to the castle, a nice reason to get out and about on a Sunday afternoon.
